Tomato plants can grow very quickly with the proper growing conditions. Letting them sprawl out freely can be a setup for disaster. Overcrowded plants are the prime target for insect and disease problems in your garden. A little simple maintenance can prevent these problems from happening.

Pruning your tomato plants will aid in the prevention of disease and pest problems as well as improve the health and productivity of your crop. With tomatoes plants you want to maximize the efficiency of photosynthesis and minimize the risk of insect and disease problems. This is best done by ensuring the plant has plenty of air flow around it and is supported off the ground. Letting your tomato plants grow dense with leaves will allow for an excessive amount of shade that can reduce it's sugar productivity. When the plant doesn't produce enough sugar the leaves will turn yellow and fall off. Staking and pruning your tomato plants will improve the productivity of fruit and allow for an earlier maturity time of as much as three weeks. When properly pruned and staked it will allow more sunlight to enter all areas of the plant and increase the sugar productivity that can be directed to develop larger fruit, along with a healthier plant.

Soil quality, moisture content and sunlight are the three main things needed in having a highly productive tomato crop. With these three your crop will not only be healthier, but the risk of insect and disease problems in your garden will be greatly reduced.

The type of flower known as the "blue hibiscus" is one of the most popular in the world. However, this flower is neither blue nor a hibiscus. In Australia, this flower is known as the "west coast gem", whereas in the United States it is widely known as "Monterey Bay." This type of plant was previously part of the hibiscus genus. However, today it is no longer included among the 200 species of hibiscus.

Growth Habit

This shrub can grow up to and over six feet tall and just as wide. The only reason to grow this plant is for the flowers they produce, which will produce hundreds each season. The flowers themselves are fairly large measuring between three to four inches in diameter, which will bloom one to two days.

When the bushes are kept in a compact arrangement, the leaves are a very attractive sight when it is in foliage. The plant itself grows very fast, and must be pruned constantly. This is done primarily after its flowering period. This will ensure a very strong growth and increased longevity for the shrub.

This plant originated in the southern and the western parts of Australia. This is an ideal place for it to grow due to the fact that a sunny area with good drainage is the best place to grow these plants. This area will offer an ideal environment for this plant to thrive.

Why prune? Well there are several very good reasons for pruning plants. These reasons are listed below in this article.

1) To improve the appearance or health of a plant. Prompt removal of diseased, damaged, or dead plant parts speeds the formation of callus tissue, and sometimes limits the spread of insects and disease. For trees, pruning a dense canopy permits better air circulation and sunlight penetration. To avoid future problems, remove crossing branches that rub or interfere with each other, and those that form narrow crotches.

2) To control the size of a plant. Pruning reduces the size of a plant so that it remains in better proportion with your landscape. Pruning can also decrease shade, prevent interference with utility lines, and allow better access for pest control.

3) To prevent personal injury or property damage. Remove dead or hazardously low limbs to make underlying areas safer. Corrective pruning also reduces wind resistance in trees. Prune shrubs with thorny branches back from walkways and other well-traveled areas. Have trained or certified arborists handle any pruning work in the crowns of large trees.

4) To train young plants. Train main scaffold branches (those that form the structure of the canopy) to produce stronger and more vigorous trees. You'll find it easier to shape branches with hand pruners when a plant is young than to prune larger branches later. Pruning often begins with young plants for bonsai, topiary, espalier, or other types of special plant training.

5) To influence fruiting and flowering. Proper pruning of flower buds encourages early vegetative growth. You can also use selective pruning to stimulate flowering in some species, and to help produce larger (though fewer) fruits in others.

6) To rejuvenate old trees and shrubs. As trees and shrubs mature, their forms may become unattractive. Pruning can restore vigor, and enhance the appearance of these plants.

Pruning is required in order to assure the appearance and health of a plant. Pruning reduces the size of a plant so that it fits into the landscape proportionately and removes dead wood and low limbs. Plants sometimes need to trained to grow a certain way. A great little tool for cutting wood. The Gerber woodsman has a 6.5 inch stainles blade with what gerber calls the double cut saw tooth design that is very efficient. It is 8.5 inches with the blade retracted and weighs 3.3 ounces. I will admit I am still warming up to the idea of another one use tool in my kit, I like multi use tools, however this tool it kind of like a flashlight, doing its one job exceptionally well. While the price is very reasonable 11 bucks, the gerber wood saw does not feel "cheap".
